ALMEDIA - The first thing you need to know about Line Mountain's District 4 quarterfinal with Central Columbia Friday afternoon is that the Eagles won 3-0.
The second - Eagles' head coach Jill Martz was not satisfied with the defense that pitched that shutout at the Jays.
Not even a little.
"I was very dissatisfied with our defense today, even with the shutout," Martz said after the game. "They (Central Columbia) had a lot of opportunities that they just didn't finish.
"Colleen Troutman (LM goalie) had a great game, but the defense in front of her was not acceptable."
While Central wasted it's chances, which were considerable, the Eagles made good.
Fresman Kortnee Schwartz struck first, scoring what proved to be the game winner with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Then junior Ciera Lahr gave Line Mountain a little more breathing room, finding the back of the cage with 6 minutes, 58 seconds left before the break.
What had Martz upset was the scoring chances - particularly penalty corners - the Eagles gave the Jays.
Central finished with with 21 corners, including 12 in the second half when the Eagles were protecting their 2-0 lead.
At one point, with about 15 minutes remaining the game and the Jays lining up for yet another corner, Martz yelled at her team from the sidelines, "Are you guys hungry yet?"
"We talk a lot about doing the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves," Martz said. "But we're not always consistent. We have lapses."
When Martz questioned her team, however, that turned to motivation. With 9;56 remaining in the second half, junior Sara Lahr scored an insurance goal for the final margin.
Central, despite the 21-8 advantage in corners, managed only six shots on goal compared to 15 for the Eagles. Troutman knocked away five shots.
Up next for Line Mountain is a semifinal matchup against Selinsgrove set for Monday at 3 p.m. at Bucknell University.
