SHIPPENSBURG - North Schuylkill sophomore Brendan Shearn is seeded second in both the 1600 and 3200-meter runs for the upcoming PIAA Class AA track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Shearn is the highest seeded entrant among 24 area athletes in 17 events.
Shearn is seeded second in the 1600 with a time of 4 minutes, 24.86 seconds. The number one seed is Tom Gruschow of Trinity (District 3), with a time of 4:22.93. In the 3200, Shearn's seeded time is 9:36.42, behind District 4 champion Joel Christian of Towanda (9:33.16).
There are seven other area seeds in the top eight, led by Southern Columbia's Matt Moore, who is seeded third in the AA 110-meter high hurdles (14.95 seconds, just .03 behind top seed Josh Nesmith of Bible Baptist (14.92).
Mount Carmel' Danielle Bernini and North Schuylkill's Carter Green are seeded fifth in the AA girls high jump and discus, respectively. Bernini and teammate Megan Van Doren are both seeded at 5-2, but Bernini has the higher seed. Van Doren is seeded ninth. Nicole Lockard of Northwestern is seeded first (5-5). Green's seeded throw is 122-3, with the top throw being 139-3 by Aubree Ray of Middletown.
Mount Carmel's boys 3200-meter relay team is seeded sixth with a time of 8:09.32. Top seed is Distric 4 champ Lewisburg (7:56.83).
Mount Carmel's Mikael Hause is seeded seventh in the AA 1600 with a time of 4:27.77, and Southern Columbia's Brett Duell is seeded eighth in the AA pole vault (13-6). The top seed in that event is Kane's Patrick Anderson (16-1).
