Strunk finds early success in new ride

Following a below average racing season by his standards on the dual-track circuit of Big Diamond and Grandview, Jeff Strunk has already acknowledged to the masses that he and his Norm Hansell-owned race team are on a mission for 2011.

Strunk split from his previous ride in the offseason (his younger brother Glenn took the ride for the 2011 season) and hooked up with colorful car owner Hansell for this seasons' attack at both tracks and the Race of Champions Tour.

Hansell and crew chief, Jay Thomas have a huge arsenal of cars and power plants; small block (Big Diamond and Grandview cars) and big block modifieds. Hansell, often outspoken in his opinions, bragged about the upcoming season and Strunk has already delivered.

Arriving at Selinsgrove Speedway for the fourth annual Icebreaker Weekend two weeks ago, Strunk put the Morrison-powered Troyer car in victory lane on the teams' maiden voyage in the Friday night 358 feature. Saturday's big block show at Selinsgrove was not successful, but the team rebounded last weekend at New Jersey's New Egypt Speedway, the second stop of the 13-race, RoC Tour.

Strunk started 12th in the 60-lap show and methodically worked his way forward, taking command of the race when leader Danny Johnson's bid for the win went flat with his left rear tire with 10 laps remaining. The Strunk/Hansell combo celebrated their $10,000 victory and RoC points lead in the frigid New Jersey night.

"To start this season like this, two wins already, especially a big block win, since I don't get to drive a big block car too often, this is awesome," said an elated Strunk. "I am competing against guys like Jimmy Horton (2nd place) and Billy Decker (3rd place) who run their big block cars 60 or so times a season. This is great."

The 2010 season at Grandview Speedway was not the best for the eight-time track champion, as Strunk failed to reach victory lane and finished second in the lucrative NASCAR title chase to Duane Howard.

With the 49th season of racing slated to open Saturday afternoon at the Bechtelsville oval, Strunk will be looking to add to his 52 career wins and make another charge at the track title.

The NASCAR sanctioned facility will open the gates at 5 p.m. and racing for the 358 mods and late models will get the green at 7 p.m.

Plenty of other racing action is slated for the weekend, as many tracks besides Grandview will begin their 2011 weekly season.

Williams Grove looks to return to action tonight with a sprint car doubleheader of 358 and 410 sprinters at 7:30. In Saturday action, Lincoln Speedway hosts the 410 sprint cars, winged super sportsman and limited late models. Port Royal Speedway presents the 410 sprinters, late models and pro stocks, while Hagerstown Speedway hosts a four-division show of late models, late model sportsman, pure stocks and hobby stocks.

Selinsgrove Speedway has a 6 p.m. starting time for the regular season opener featuring the 358 sprint cars led by track champion Pat Cannon, pro stocks and roadrunners.

In local drag racing action, Numidia Dragway canceled tonight's street legal drag racing and Saturday's test session, but if the weather cooperates, a test and tune day is planned for Sunday. Beaver Springs Dragway has also canceled tonight's Vegas Fuel street drags, but looks to carry on with a test and tune session Saturday and host the first Summit Series points race on Sunday afternoon.

A little bit of mistaken identity last week, as I inadvertently confused Brett Cox at the wheel of his son's Monte Carlo in the Numidia TCR driver photo which was actually Southern Columbia student Brandon Cox.

Indians top Seals

COAL TOWNSHIP - Thursday afternoon at Shamokin Area was cold and wet, not the ideal situation for a softball game.

But after a 6-4 win over Selinsgrove, maybe the Indians can petition to have all their games played in inclement conditions.

It helps that the things the Indians are good at this year don't rely on sunshine.

For the first time since Christi Cryder has been coach, Shamokin is doing the little things well.

Namely, laying down bunts and stealing bases. In other words, playing small ball.

"We're stealing bases and manufacturing runs this year, which before, we couldn't do," Cryder said. "We have a lot of kids with speed."

Kids is the operative term.

Shamokin started five freshmen, and in key positions, too.

Three-quarters of the starting infield, excluding senior and four-year starter Angie Bainbridge at shortstop, was made up of rookies, as were the spots in left and center.

Between the five, they had four of Shamokin's hits and scored four runs.

The win was especially nice coming after a 17-7 season-opening loss to Milton on Tuesday.

"This was a very important win," Cryder said. "It was a good win. With younger kids, this was their first varsity win. They played well considering the conditions."

Selinsgrove started the game by putting two runs on the board.

Kamie Hauck started the game with a walk, followed by an error in center field on a ball hit by Bryn Musser. The two eventually scored, but Selinsgrove couldn't push across any more with Shamokin pitcher Steph Pancher settling into a groove and striking out the last three batters in the inning.

The Indians answered immediately in their half of the first.

Jenn Hornberger, one of those freshmen, singled, followed by a hit by Bainbridge. The two came around to score later in the inning.

Selinsgrove took the lead in the second, but then Pancher and the defense shut down the Seals.

Pancher totaled five strikeouts, and after a first-inning error, the defense settled down.

"They've done a good job fielding, but the first inning has been our downfall," Cryder said. "I think it's just nerves, but after we get past that first inning they're fielding pretty well."

Shamokin took the lead for good in the fourth inning.

Natalie Wolfe singled to start the inning, moved up to second base when Brianna Bonshock drew a walk. The two freshmen advanced a base when Pancher fought through a 10-pitch at-bat to walk.

Wolfe scored on a sacrifice fly by Hornberger, and two batters later Helena Supsic, another freshman, singled in Bonshock.

Plenty of talent returns for track and field

$

The way the first two weeks of spring have gone, it's just possible that Mother Nature does not want a track and field season for 2011. Maybe all the tracks can be converted to speed skating venues, and we'll be done with it.

That's not likely to be the case though. In fact, a couple of teams have already had their first dual or tri-meets, and the the season's first big invitational, the Selinsgrove Invitational, is set for Saturday. And sooner or later, there will be warm(er) weather.

And there will be fine performances to see.

Mount Carmel and Southern Columbia's boys teams each won division titles in the Heartland Conference last season, and should be serious contenders again, and both Shamokin and North Schuylkill have better depth than in the past and could be much better.

On the girls front, North Schuylkill looks primed for another shot at Schuylkill League Division I and District 11-AA titles, and Mount Carmel is looking to use its solid lineup to unseat Central Columbia as Heartland Conference Division II champion. Shamokin should be improved, although its Heartland Division I schedule will be tough. Southern Columbia lost some terrific seniors a year ago and could be in a rebuilding session, but the Tigers still have some talented individuals.

No home for Tigers

Southern Columbia will face a particular hurdle. Because of construction at Tiger Stadium and other sites around the school, the Tigers will not have any home meets and will be limited in the type of practice they can do. Southern will have one "home" meet at Shamokin, and the Tigers are also practicing once a week at Shamokin.

More depth for most boys teams

Mount Carmel boys coach Mike Farronato lost some top talent to graduation, but has a nucleus of return-

ing state qualifiers from the 400 and 1600-meter relay teams, including Josh Maloney, the area's top sprinter the past two seasons.

"I feel that we are going to be a more balanced team," Farronato said. "Our young group of field athletes should be ready to contribute to our overall success. We return nine athletes who have been able to experience what it means to qualify for the state championships. We have also added a few new athletes that should contribute."

Besides Maloney, Ed Stewart, Dylan Lawrence, Chris Monahan, Mikael Hause, Meyrick Lamb and Tyler Hodge were state qualifiers, along with alternates Alex Zsido and Elijah Duran. Other solid veterans for the Red Tornadoes include Ian Kanezo, Cody Yeager, Justin Skavery, Mike Scicchitano, Ray Heromin and Eric Joraskie.

A lack of depth could hurt Southern in its quest to repeat as Division III champ, but the Tigers have some top flight individuals, including hurdler-sprinter Matt Moore, thrower Tom Schetroma, jumper-javelin thrower Jake Townsend and sprinter-jumper Jake Morton. Freshman Andrew Steely was a state qualifier in cross country and should give a big boost to the distance corps.

Shamokin has a good nucleus of veterans, particularly in the middle distance events and relays, and could have more depth than it has had in some time.

"We have a lot of positive additions to the team," said head coach Mike Rogers. "We have a great freshman class which will have a chance to develop and contribute. They are pushing the upperclassmen, which will hopefully translate into a better season. Last year we went to meets with 18 to 20 athletes and relied of five or six to spread themselves around in an attempt to score enough points to win. This year we should be able to focus on events and not worry about having to do extra events to keep a meet close."

Among the Indians' returning standouts are Jon Grybos, Brandon Nash, Brandon Mendoza, Jake Phillips, Jared Haddock, Jared Montgomery, Alex Startzel, Scott Bradley and Matt Gass. Junior Dave Dorsett, who missed all of last season with an injury, had a fine freshman season and hopes to pick back up.

North Schuykill should have more depth than in past years, and boasts some of the area's best performers. Sophomore distance runner Brendan Shearn had the area's best of 9:54.88 in the 3200 last year, and has already topped it with a 9:50 in the first meet of the season, in addition to running a 4:38 1600. He was third in District 11 in the 3200 and another sophomore, Ethan Motsney, was third in the 200. Tyler Dean, Kody Flail, Dylan Hughes, Ed Pavalko, Mike Shinkus and Brady Simms are other veterans who should make the Spartans much improved.

Veteran Tornadoes

Mount Carmel's girls failed to win their Heartland division by three points in a loss to Central Columbia and boast 18 returning lettermen for this year's shot. Among their standouts are seniors Danielle Bernini, Karissa Cichon, Rachel Fletcher, Kelsey Kraynak, Cassie Mace, Christine Mrozek, and juniors Heather Bolick, Ali Singh, Kirsten Sinopoli and Megan Van Doren.

"We have some newcomers who are adding more depth to our distance events," said coach Angela Farronato.

Shamokin should have more depth than usual but two key veterans, defending district high jump champ Summer Reigle and Kendra Maschuck, another district medalist, did not come out for the team.

"It should be an interesting season," said Shamokin coach Dave Kopitsky.

Top returnees for the Indians include Emily Barnes, Renea Broscious, Megan Ciborowski, Allyson Delbaugh, Kristen Kozar, Molly McDevitt, Amanda Pheasant, Brooke Reed, Brandi Segura, Anna Summers, Briaun Williams, Emily Zakrzewski, Keena Zalar and Samantha Zielinskie.

Kopitsky is also depending on some newcomers to come in and score points right away.

Southern Columbia lost outstanding seniors to graduation, including Cynthia Adams, Megan Phillips, Monica Manney and Jenna Carl, and could be in a bit of a rebuilding pattern.

"We are a bit inexperienced and we have had limited time on a track," said veteran head coach Kevin Jones.

Ali Oley, Rachel Scicchitano, Maddie Beisswanger, Lindsey Landis, Marissa Noll, Jordan Marks, Maura Wilson, Sara Raup, Sarah Breech and Rebecca Bryden.

There are 22 freshmen on the team, and some are expected to contribute.

North Schuylkill is coming of a 7-1 season with a veteran group in the Schuylkill League, including the area's top returning state medalist, Kaitlyn McSurdy, who was fifth in the AA 300-meter hurdles and is a two-time District 11 champ in the event. Also back are two other members of the Spartans' state fifth-place 1600-meter relay team along with McSurdy, Mimi Teter and Caitlyn Deeter.

Kendell Devaney, Erica Ferraiolo, Megan Temple, Shelby Weikel, Amy Laudeman and Diane Lindenmuth are other very experience Spartan vets.

Outlook: A good freshman class should push a veteran group of upperclassmen. The team should have more depth than last season and not have to rely so much on five or six athletes to score lots of points in dual meets. Should be strong in relays and middle distance events.

Southern Columbia

Outlook: Veterans such as Devaney, McSurdy, Temple, Teter, Weikel, Deeter and Lindenmuth give the Spartans a core group few teams can match. SELINSGROVE - Southern Columbia's Matt Moore won two events and finished fourth in another to top performances by athletes from Shamokin and Southern on Saturday at the 2nd Selinsgove Invitational.

Moore won both the 110-meter high hurdles, in 16.42 seconds, and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (in a meet record 41.38 seconds) and took fourth in the 100-meter dash.

Moore was one of only four multiple individual winners, boys and girls, in the 11-team event.

The only other win from either area school came from Shamokin's boys 1600-meter relay team of Brandon Mendoza, Brandon Nash, Matt Gass and Shane Williams, whose winning time of 3:35.24 was more than five seconds ahead of runnerup Central Columbia.

Southern freshman Andrew Steely was second in the 3200 meters and third in the 1600. The

Tigers' Tom Schetroma was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus, and Jake Townsend was third in the high jump.

Also placing third were Shamokin's 3200-meter relay team and Southern's 400-meter relay team. Shamokin's Jared Haddock and Jared Montgomery were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the long jump, the Indians' 400-meter relay team was fourth, and Brandon Mendoza was fifth in the 800.

Also for Southern, Keith Day tied for sixth in the pole vault and the Tigers' 1600-meter relay team was sixth.

On the girls side, Southern's Ali Oley was second in the javelin and sixth in the shot put. Shamokin's Renea Broscious was third in the shot put and Brooke Sejuit was fourth in the 400. The Indians' 1600-meter relay team was also fourth.

Southern had three other sixth-place finishes - Madison Beisswanger in the long jump, Hannah Stone in the high jump and the 400-meter relay team.

Selinsgrove jumper Mike Rodriguez was a triple winner. He tied the meet record of 6-4 in the high, took the long at 20-10 and the triple at 44-5.

The other multiple individual winners were Williamsport thrower Rachel Fatherly and Jersey Shore distance runner Ben Copenhaver. Fatherly set meet records in the shot put (39-6¾) and discus (106-6), and Copenhaver did likewise in the 1600 (4:34.46) and 3200 (9:56.93).

Time for Wrestlemania is here

Finally, we are just hours away from WrestleMania XXVII and while there will be an epic No Holds Barred showdown between the Undertaker and Triple H, it may be the WWE title defense of the Miz against John Cena that goes on last as the main event of the evening. That's because to the specter of the Rock coming back to Atlanta to host the extravaganza and the tease that he will be physically involved in the Miz/Cena bout.

Where will it lead? Could there be a Cena-Rock showdown down the road? Rock is scheduled for Raw tomorrow night. Or will Rock help Cena defeat the Miz and the two overcome their differences? Maybe Rock helps Cena beat Miz and Cena resents the assist and we go from there. There are plenty of possibilities and Mr. McMahon is hoping bringing back the Rock will boost considerably the pay-per-view buyrate.

Triple H and the Dead Man had another staredown and dueling promos this past Monday at Raw with Shawn Michaels making a surprise appearance to really seal the deal in terms of bringing interest in the encounter to a climax. Remember, it was Undertaker keeping his streak alive last year and sending the Heartbreak Kid into retirement - something Michaels had done to Ric Flair at a prior Mania (although Flair has since returned with TNA).

Michaels actually tried to hit Taker with sweet chin music during the confrontation on Raw when Taker began bragging about beating Shawn, but Hunter blocked the maneuver. Will Michaels help his friend HHH end the streak that he couldn't last year? Or will Michaels turn on Helmsley and cost him the opportunity to end the celebrated undefeated string of the aging and ailing Dead Man? There is plenty of intrigue to make folks want to tune in and find out.

Jerry the King Lawler makes his long overdue and well-deserved WM debut battling fellow broadcaster Michael Cole in a feature attraction that includes Stone Cold Steve Austin as guest referee. The return of the Rattlesnake corresponds with his debut as host of Tough Enough, which is scheduled right after Raw on Mondays on USA at 11:00 p.m.

Edge defends the world title against Alberto Del Rio in a bout that most people seem to think will be a coming of age for the nephew of Mil Mascaras. Christian could end up involved in the finish. Looks like a title change here.

Randy Orton and C.M. Punk renew their rivalry with a grudge match that has been pretty well developed over the past couple of weeks on television and actually goes back quite a while in its origin. Trish Stratus returns to Mania and teams with John Morrison and Snooki in six-person action against Layla, Dolph Ziggler and Michelle McCool.

Rey Mysterio faces Cody Rhodes in Cody's highest profile match thus far. Sheamus and Daniel Bryan battle over the United States championship. The one-time prestigious Intercontinental belt is nowhere on the schedule.

Shamokin senior is Wrestler of the Year

$

When Wes Tillett started the 2010-11 wrestling season, the Shamokin Area senior was noticeably bigger than he had been in prior seasons, particularly in the midsection and thighs.

He had put on 30 pounds from the previous season, when he placed seventh at the PIAA Class AA state wrestling championships at 285 pounds. He competed that season at about 230 pounds, and was athletic enough and quick enough to make up for the lack of weight against most opponents.

But Tillett came back this season at about 260 pounds, beefing up for football and keeping on the extra weight for wrestling.

"Coach (Todd) Hockenbroch said he thought if I got bigger it would really help me out, and I worked hard at putting on weight over the summer," Tillett said during the season.

Tillett was a force on the defensive line during the fall for the Indians' football team, but at first glance, it appeared the extra weight might have a negative effect on the mat. He looked like he might be slower.

No way.

Tillett and the rest of his veteran teammates took some tough early losses at the PowerAde and Beast of the East tournaments, which had some people questioning their high rankings, but wrestling against high caliber competition paid off. Tillett lost only once in the final two months of the season after a 3-2 upset loss to Shikellamy's Nolan Blackwell, and that was in the state championship bout against defending champ John Rizzo of Richland, by the same score.

Tillett ended the season with a 34-6 record, was the area's highest finisher at the state meet and is The News-Item's Wrestler of the Year because of it.

Along the way, he won another Southern Sectional title, his first District 4 championship and a second straight Northeast Regional crown.

Tillet earned All-Area honors

for the third straight season, and has signed on to join former teammate Derek Shingara to wrestle collegiately at Bloomsburg University. He finished his high school career with a record of 129-31, and his 129 career wins rank him second in school history to teammate Brandon Pesarchick's 150.

Pesarchick, Lahr and Lee Supsic, Tillett's senior teammates, all join him as repeat picks on the team. Other repeaters are Line Mountain's 2010 state champ and third-place finisher this season, Zain Retherford and his teammates, Travis Erdman and Adam Kritzer; Southern Columbia's Brian Watkins; and Mount Carmel's Dylan Hornberger.

First time picks are Line Mountain's Seth Lansberry, Mason Zimmerman and Kenny Rothermel; Mount Carmel's Nick Dusendschine; and North Schuylkill's Scott Yagielniskie.

Zain Retherford Line Mountain, soph.

Retherford didn't defend his state title, but he did a whole lot of other things - defend his sectional, district and regional titles, win a couple invitational championships, finish third in the state and, oh by the way, beat AAA 112-pound state champion Jordan Conaway of New Oxford, 5-0, at the New Oxford Invitational. He finished the season 44-2 and is 84-3 for his career.

Travis Erdman Line Mountain, sr.

Erdman was undefeated until the district championship final against Montoursville's Luke Frey, who handed Erdman three of his four defeats in a 43-4 season. The other was to state champ Travis Shaffer of Derry in the state semifinals on the way to his fourth-place finish. He finished his career with a 140-26 record and will wrestle at Shippensburg University.

Josh Lahr Shamokin, sr.

Finished sixth at 135 at the state championships for the second time, ending the season 36-7 and his career 120-32. Won his second district and regional titles, and third sectional title and was a state qualifier for the third time. A four-time all-area pick.

Brandon Pesarchick Shamokin, sr.

Although he failed to place at states, Pesarchick finished his career as Shamokin's all-time wins leader (150) and as a four-time state qualifier and two-time state placewinner. Was 30-9 for the season and 150-31 for career. Will wrestle at Bucknell University. Sectional champion, district and regional runner-up. A four-time all-area pick.

Adam Kritzer Line Mountain, jr.

Qualified for state tournament second year in a row. Posted a 35-15 record at 135. Sectional runner-up to Lahr, third at district meet, third at regional. Career record 78-35. A repeat selection.

Seth Lansberry Line Mountain, soph.

Wrestling at 125, Lansberry was a state qualifier for the first time and won a consolation bout there. Posted a 35-11 record and is 58-26 for his career. Sectional champion, district and regional runner-up.

Brian Watkins Southern Columbia, sr.

Watkins went 31-7 and finally earned a state qualifying berth, at 145 pounds. Also earned his first sectional title, and was regional runner-up and fourth at district meet. Ended his career 111-28.

Nick Dusendschine Mount Carmel, sr.

Another 125-pounder, Dusendschine wrestled back through consolation brackets at district and regional meets to qualify for his first state meet, where he went 1-2, winning an overtime bout. Finished the season 37-12 and was 120-48 for his career. Finished third at sectional, fifth at district meet and third at regional.

Scott Yagielniskie North Schuylkill, sr.

Claimed third-place finish at Southeast Regional to earn a state qualifying berth. Went 32-10 on the season, 62-37 career. District 11 runner-up.

Mason Zimmerman Line Mountain, jr.

Only in his third year of wrestling, improved from 15-19 as a sophomore to 33-15, just missing a state qualifying berth at 119 with a fourth-place regional finish. Sectional runner-up and fourth at district meet. Career record 48-34.

Kenny Rothermel Line Mountain, soph.

Wrestling at 189, was a sectional champion and fourth-place finisher at district meet before being eliminated at regional tournament. Was 26-17 for season and is 37-36 for career.

Dylan Hornberger Mount Carmel, sr.

Hornberger posted a 30-8 record and finished his career with a 130-41 mark. Competing at rugged 135 weight class, he finished third at sectional meet, fourth at district meet and was a regional qualifier for the first time.

Lee Supsic Shamokin, sr.

Was fourth Shamokin senior to hit the 100-win mark, going 23-10 for the season and 102-56 for his career. Sectional runner-up at 152, sixth at district meet.

Honorable mention

Colton Zimmerman, Line Mountain; Meyrick Lamb, Brett Przekop, Mount Carmel; Tyler Dean, Quentin Moyer, Austin Hummel, Chawn McGrath, Kody Newberry, Brett Paul, Jesse Picklo, Jordan Shinkus, North Schuylkill; Jake Becker, Southern Columbia; Dane Shovlin, Shamokin.

MINERSVILLE - North Schuylkill's Cody Klinger brought his best stuff to Saturday's semifinal game in the 19th annual Russ Rothermel Tournament.

Klinger hurled a one-hitter, striking out 13 and walking none, to lead the Spartans to a 3-0 victory over host Minersville.

The only hit he allowed was an infield single to Cole Weachock in the fourth inning.

Austin Hornberger was the offensive star for North Schuylkill, hitting a double, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and scoring on Derek Dumboski's RBI single in the sixth.

In the other semifinal, Mount Carmel defeated Shenandoah Valley 12-2. The Spartans and Red Tornadoes will play for the championship at 2 p.m. next Saturday at Minersville.

The Blue Devils and Miners will play the consolation game at a date and time to be announced.

Blane Heimbach smashed the 25-lap track record en route to the win in the 358 sprint car opener at Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night.

The victory was the 31st of his career at the Snyder County oval. Heimbach's time of 7:34.914 broke the record by 16 seconds. The win was worth $1,500.

Heimbach, of Selinsgrove, has had a great start to the season. He won the 410 sprint car opener at Port Royal two weeks ago.

Heimbach started fourth and passed Phil Walter for the lead after the second lap. Pat Cannon was up to second and within striking distance of Heimbach late in the race, but had an engine failure with four laps left.

Walter, Jason Shultz, Larry Kelleher and Logan Schuchart followed Heimbach.

Cannon broke the 8-lap track record in his heat race with a time of 2:17.003.

Jason Smith of Williamsport won the pro stock feature and Bob Bussey of Northumberland won the roadrunner feature.

Selinsgrove will present its first four-division program of the season this Saturday including 358 sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners at 6 p.m. An open practice session will be held Wednesday from 6:30-9.

Ryan Taylor started second and led all 25 laps of the 410 sprint car feature at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night. It was a second career win for the 22-year-old driver from Perkasie in eastern Pennsylvania.

Tower City's Mark Smith finished second ahead of Lance Dewease, Rick Lafferty and Steve Buckwalter. Elizabethville's Mike Erdley came back from an early race spin to finish sixth. Todd Shaffer and Daryn Pittman were feature flip victims. Harrisburg's Chad Layton was involved in the same accident and didn't finish.

Waylon Wagner won the late model feature.

Mike Bittinger won the 410 sprint feature at Lincoln Speedway over Gerard McIntyre Jr., Brad McClelland, Danny Dietrich and Doug Dodson.

Gregg Foster won the super sportsman feature at Lincoln and Grant Adams won the 358 late models.

Williams Grove Speedway's racing program was rained out on Friday night. Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville gets underway this Sunday at 5 p.m.

Jays roll over Tigers

CATAWISSA R.R. - Every young pitcher has a game where they want to run off the mound.

Monday, against Central Columbia, was Mallory Tomaschik's.

After giving up her third home run of the game, and second of the fifth inning, the Southern Columbia sophomore looked shell shocked.

Mercifully, Southern Columbia head coach Al Cihocki pulled her in favor of senior Emily Yoder. With the Blue Jays up 8-2, there was no use subjecting Tomaschik to any more punishment.

Even bringing in Yoder was of little relief to the scoreboard. Central scored four more runs and won the game 12-2 in five innings in a game Southern expected to stand a fighting chance.

"It gives us an idea of where we're at," Cihocki said. "I thought we would do a little bit better than we did against them. Obviously, it didn't happen."

Things didn't always look so dire for the Tigers, though.

After two innings, Central had scored just two runs, and got those thanks to an error on Southern's defense.

While outs can never be assumed, an error instead of an out on the first Central batter of the second inning came back to bite the Tigers hard.

The error gave the Blue Jays an extra out, which sent Devon Siegrist to the plate after two pop fly outs. She ripped the first pitch she saw over the fence in left field.

Central helped itself to three more runs in the third after more defensive lapses from Southern.

A misjudged ball in center field led to a triple for Alexa Diltz, which was followed by two singles by Brianna Taylor and Brooke Clarke. All three scored to push the Jays' lead to 5-0.

Things started to look up for the Tigers when Kirsten Blass hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Southern scored again that inning when Tomaschik crossed the plate on Mackenzie Silver's triple to bring the score to 5-2.

The Tigers held Central scoreless in the fourth, but stranded a runner on base in their half of the inning.

The relative calm of the fourth inning however led to a false sense of security for the Tigers.

Clarke started the fifth off with a solo home run for the Blue Jays. A single by Caitlin Martz and a home run by Kimmy Hollister were enough to chase Tomaschik.

"They hit the ball well," Cihocki said. "They had three home runs on us. There's not much you can do with that.

"We didn't play well defensively. We dropped some fly balls, just didn't look good. We have to get better."

MCA, Milton girls tie

MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Area girls track and field coach Angela Farronato knew her team's meet with Milton would be close on Thursday.

In fact, each team had something go awry, and it still evened out.

"They were missing their best jumper, and we dropped the baton in the 400 relay which we should have won," Farronato said.

When it was all said and done, the two Heartland Conference Division II teams tied, 75-75, in a meet which could have great consequences for the division. Last year, Central Columbia won the division with a three-point win over the Red Tornadoes, who were hoping to take the division this season. Obviously, Milton will have something to say about it now.

Mount Carmel also took a 123-22 win over Mifflinburg in the double dual meet.

On the boys side, Mount Carmel swept Mifflinburg 130-14 and Milton, 117-33.

"We're very young in some areas," said Farronato, whose team is 1-0-1 in the division after an opening triangular meet last week. "We still have some depth, though. We expected the meet to be close, though."

Mount Carmel's depth eventually paid off. Milton had an 11-7 advantage in wins, had two triple individual winners - Moira Nestor (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 200) and Mallory Reed (1600, 800, 3200) and took all three relays - but Mount Carmel had a 20-10 advantage in seconds and thirds.

Cassandra Niglio won the long and triple jumps for Mount Carmel. Bekah Buczeskie (shot put), Megan Van Doren (high jump), Alison Varano (100), Heather Bolick (javelin) and Cassie Mace (discus) were other winners for Mount Carmel.

Karissa Cichon (both hurdles) joined Niglio as a double winner against Mifflinburg.

Mount Carmel's boys (2-0) won every event against Mifflinburg. Elijah Duran was a triple winner, taking the high hurdles, triple jump and pole vault. Josh Maloney and Mikael Hause were each double individual winners. Maloney won the 100 and 200, and Hause won the 800 and 1600.

Maloney, Hause and Duran were all double winners against the Black Panthers.

There was no score between Milton and Mifflinburg, who had already raced against each other this season. The meet became a double dual because the Mifflinburg meet, originally scheduled for May 17, would have been only a day before the Wildcats were in the District 4 AAA meet.

Mount Carmel will compete in the Purple and White Relays at Shamokin on Saturday.
