Shearn's state gold puts him among elite company

$

At times, it seems as if North Schuylkill junior distance runner Brendan Shearn is not made of the same genetic makeup as the people he runs against. Shearn can be so dominant, even against good competition, that it's almost scary.

He was that way this year in the PIAA Class 3200-meter run championship, when he threw in a 66-second quarter-mile on the second lap after being bunched in a little at the start, "to see what the other guys were made of."

They weren't made of the same stuff he was. Shearn led the rest of the way to win the state championship, his second this school year after winning the PIAA AA cross country title in the fall, finishing the race in 9 minutes, 22.09 seconds, 1.75 seconds ahead of Holy Cross' Rico Galassi.

But then, on a blistering hot, humid day at Shippensburg University, Shearn showed that he is, after all, only human. He wilted in the heat and the faster pace of the 1600-meter final and struggled home dead last among 12 runners in an average time of 4:48.61.

But that little lapse, in a way, proved Shearn's greatness even more. He is, after all, like all the other guys; perhaps he just works a little harder. Ultimately, maybe that explains why Shearn, the 2012 News-Item Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year, is so good.

Why, in addition to his titles this year, he was state runnerup in the 3200 as a sophomore. Why he has dominated District 11 AA distance running with four gold medals in the past two seasons.

Shearn, who shared the award last season with Southern Columbia's Matt Moore, is one of nine repeat selections on the team, as well as Moore, who won two medals at the state meet. The other repeat selections are Southern Columbia's Tom Schetroma, Mount Carmel's Meyrick Lamb, Mikael Hause and Elijah Duran, Shamokin's Matt Gass, and North Schuylkill's Daniel McSurdy and Ethan Motsney.

Those nine are joined on the team by first-time picks Jacob Kleman, Rob Varano, Justin Skavery and Eric Joraskie of Mount Carmel; David Williams and Brandon Nash of Shamokin; and Joe Kleman, Luke Rarig and Bryan Gedman of Southern Columbia.

Shearn, in addition to his state title and his repeat wins in both the 3200 and 1600 at the District 11 and Schuylkill League meets, ran a blistering 9:15 3200 in an elite invitational meet in April at Arcadia, Calif., a race in which he finished 15th among 26 of the best high school runners from around the country. Shearn nipped his teammate, McSurdy, in scoring for the season by .75 of a point, 128.5-127.75.

Short sketches of the other all-area performers are as follows:

Matt Moore

Ashland stumbles in first game

FRACKVILLE - Things started out nicely for Ashland's 11-12 all-stars on Saturday's opening day of the District 24 Little League Tournament when they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Frackville.

Not much went right after that, however.

Frackville came back with three runs in its half of the first, then exploded for 10 runs, sending 14 batters to the plate, in the second inning, on the way to a 15-3 win in a Pool 2 game.

Every Frackville batter either had a hit, scored or drove in a run. Cleanup hitter Max Nolter was 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in one, and number five and six hitters Reggie Crawford and Max Schally were 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. Schally drove in three runs, Crawford two, and both scored two runs.

But leadoff hitter Scott Grigas had what was likely the biggest hit. With one out and one on base in the second inning and the score still 3-2, he sent a home run over the left-centerfield fence to give Frackville a 5-2 lead and ignite the 10-run inning.

"We hit well, " said Frackville Manager Kevin Perneta. "I thought we could be a pretty good hitting team and luckily, everyone showed up ready to play today."

Ashland starting pitcher Lucas Rushannon had a bit of bad luck, too. He had two-strike counts on several batters in the second inning but couldn't finish many of them off. In addition, Ashland made six errors.

"He's not real experienced, and he threw changeups when he had those counts," said Ashland Manager Pete Kenenitz. "He should have just kept firing the ball. But we threw the ball around a lot, too. I've been managing 10 years and that's the first time we've been 10-runned in a game."

Crawford was the starting pitcher for Frackville and got the win with relief help from Nick Kowalishen, who also had a triple, scored two runs and drove in one. Dominic Kadziela had a pinch-hit, two-run single for the winners.

Cory Long was 2-for-2 with a double and drove in two runs for Ashland.

Frackville plays Tri-Valley in the next round, and Ashland goes against Schuylkill Haven.

Green piling up impressive resume

$

Carter Green's 2012 track and field season didn't end the way the North Schuylkill sophomore hoped it would but it shouldn't take away from all that she achieved earlier in the season.

Green, who placed fifth in the AA discus at the 2011 state championships, qualified in that event and the shot put this season, but failed to place in either. That disappointment can't take away from the fact that she has been one of the dominant throwers in the Schuylkill League and District 11 for two years.

She won her second straight district and Schuylkill League discus titles, with a best of 138 feet, 1 inch. She was also second in the league in the shot put and sixth in the district in the shot put, among a host of state qualifiers in the latter event.

She was the only area athlete to qualify for the state meet in two events and finished third among area athletes in scoring with 115 points.

For those achievements, Green is the 2012 News-Item Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

She is one of eight repeat selections on the News-Item All-Area team from last season. Other repeat picks are Southern Columbia's Teanna Shutt and Brooke Adamski; Mount Carmel's Ali Varano, Heather Bolick and Megan Van Doren; Shamokin's Reneas Broscious and North Schuylkill's Brittany Martin.

Those eight are joined on the team by newcomers Gabrielle Engelke, Ali Singh and Lauren Hause of Mount Carmel; Carly Gregas of North Schuylkill; Samantha Bressi, Bailey Bzdak and Olivia Potter of Southern Columbia; Molly McDevitt and Anna Summers of Shamokin; and Line Mountain sophomore Colleen Troutman, who competes for Upper Dauphin in those schools' co-op program.

Sketches of the other all-area picks are as follows:

Gabrielle Engelke

Mount Carmel, sr.

Senior led all area point scorers with 132.5 points and advanced to the state meet by finishing second at the District 4-AA meet in the javelin. Was also fifth in the district in the pole vault. Heartland Invitational runnerup in the javelin, fifth in the pole vault. Set school record in the pole vault (10-1).

Carly Gregas

North Schuylkill, fr.

Tied for fifth in the state in the AA high jump with a leap of 5-2 after winning the District 11 title and Schuylkill Leagut titles.

Teanna Shutt

Southern Columbia, soph.

Rare combination of distance runner and pole vaulter was the area's second leading scorer with 121.5 points. Just missed qualifying for state meet in 1600 with time of 5:18.56, .16 of a second off the qualifying standard, in placing third at disrict meet. Fourth in 1600 at Heartland Invitational.

Ali Varano

Mount Carmel, soph.

Although Varano did not return to the state meet which she qualified for as a freshman, she nonetheless had a fine all-around season. She scored 121 points. Was sixth in the 200 and fifth in the 400 at the district meet and added an eighth in the long jump. At Heartland Invitational, was seventh in 200 and 400, ran on Red Tornadoes' sixth-place 1600 relay team and was sixth in long jump.

Heather Bolick

Mount Carmel, sr.

After qualifying for state meet in javelin as a junior, qualified in discus as a senior, placing second in the district. Sixth in javelin, seventh in discus at Heartland Invitational. Scored 110 points for Red Tornadoes and will compete in track and field at Shippensburg University.

Renea Broscious

Shamokin, sr.

Consistent in both shot put and discus for Indians, and team's scoring leader (91 points). District AAA runnerup in discus, fourth in shot put. Third in shot, sixth in discus at Heartland Invitational.

Brittany Martin

North Schuylkill, jr.

Schuylkill League champion and District 11-AA runnerup at 800 meters. Had season best time of 2:19.98 to qualify for state final but injury restricted her to 12th place. Scored 77.75 points.

Brooke Adamski

Mick Foley spices up lackluster pay-per-view

$
0
0

A slimmed-down Mick Foley spent Father's Day at Knoebels Amusement Resort last Sunday, but by Monday evening was back to Long Island and decked out in a suit to open Raw as the guest general manager of the week in the wake of the firing of John Laurinaitis after John Cena defeated Big Show at Sunday night's No Way Out pay-per-view.

The ppv was rather average overall, with no title changes. C.M. Punk retained the WWE belt in a three-way over Daniel Bryan and Kane, who was pinned by Punk after A.J. feigned injury to distract Kane. Punk administered the GTS to the Big Red Monster, as the announcers are fond of calling him, and it was all over.

Sheamus was still world heavyweight champion after defeating the talented Dolph Ziggler at No Way Out with his signature Brogue Kick. Their rematch on Smackdown Friday ended with the same result. Christian kept the Intercontinental title as a result of his win over Cody Rhodes and Layla pinned Beth Phoenix to hold onto the divas' crown.

Sin Cara bested Hunico and a four way to determine the top contenders for the tag team championship was captured by the Prime Time Players-Titus O'Neil and Darren Young- as they outlasted the Usos, Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd and Primo and Epico.

Santino Marella defeated Ricardo Rodriguez in a tuxedo match that was kept mercifully short at just over four minutes, but fans didn't seem too happy with it.

Triple H was out to do a promo challenging Brock Lesnar to a bout at SummerSlam. While there is another WWE pay-per-view in July before SS, Money in the Bank, it seems as if the company expects that will be a tough sell and has decided to start working on the more important one that traditionally closes the summer in late August.

Hunter's promo was not especially strong at the ppv, but the next night on Raw saw him punch out Lesnar representative Paul Heyman, who declined to accept Helmsley's challenge of Lesnar on Lesnar's behalf since the big guy's contract has a limited number of dates to it and he is not expected back until a Raw close to SS to promote the match.

At Raw, Laurinaitis was already back to finish his booked handicap match with partners Big Show and David Otunga against Cena. With the storyline being that Laurinaitis is already fired and unable to do anything for their careers, first Show and then Otunga walked out on Johnny Ace and left him to be destroyed by Cena.

Fresh off its momentum from a recent successful Slammiversary pay-per-view. TNA is now running a Bound For Glory tournament on Impact. Bobby Roode retained the company championship over Sting, who was announced as the first inductee to the TNA Hall of Fame at Slammiversary. It would seem they are building to a James Storm challenge of his former partner Roode as the main event.

Unfortunately, poor Chris Sabin, who was coming off reconstructive surgery of his right knee, blew out the ACL of his left knee during a recent match on Impact. Partner Alex Shelley has apparently left the promotion after his contract came due and he declined to re-sign. Matt Morgan is also thought to be considering leaving TNA. The crew has an upcoming show in Buffalo that has become an annual affair at a minor league ballpark.

Cannon earns 358 victory

Pat Cannon of York extended his point lead with a dominating win in the 358 sprint feature at Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night. His third win of the season was worth $1,500 in a car owned by Zane and Vicki Highlands of Carlisle. It was the 35th win of his career at Selinsgrove, which is the most all-time.

Cannon passed leader Nyle Berkes following a lap 10 restart and earned the win over Berkes by 3.7 seconds. Mark Smith, TJ Stutts and Jason Shultz completed the top five.

Selinsgrove's Dylan Yoder held off point leader Jeff Rine of Danville to win the late model feature and tie Rine for most wins this season with three.

Jason Smith of Williamsport won the 15-lap pro stock feature and Dustin Snook of McClure was awarded the win in the roadrunner feature when Ricky Bender's car failed post-race inspection.

Selinsgrove will host a rare Friday night race on the big track this week featuring the fourth event in the inaugural Mach 1 Chassis Mid-Atlantic Championship series for the 358/360 sprint cars.

The Firecracker 30 for the 358 sprints will be held on Saturday, paying $2,000 to win. The late models, pro stocks and roadrunners join the sprints on Saturday.

Kevin Beach Jr. won the 40th anniversary race for the sportsman modifieds at Big Diamond Speedway on Friday over Mike Lisowski and Brad Brightbill. Christian Donati won the 20-lap roadrunner feature.

The sprint cars will be at Big Diamond as part of the 22nd annual Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speed Week series on Sunday, July 1.

Seven Speed Week races have been held at Big Diamond with York's Greg Hodnett winning five of them.

Hodnett won his sixth sprint car race of the season at Port Royal over Daryn Pittman and Tyler Walker. Mike Lupfer won the late model feature and Herndon's Brett Schadel finished second. Danny Dietrich was the sprint car winner at Lincoln and Ryan Wilson won the 358 sprints.

Brian Montieth won the sprint car feature at Williams Grove over rookie Ryan Smith and Lance Dewease.

Former World of Outlaws driver and Knoxville Nationals champion Danny Lasoski is the new driver of the John Zemaitis, Zemco Speed Equipment sprinter.

ESPY - Ryan Burns worked a 3-hitter, striking out nine, to lead Shamokin/Mount Carmel to a 9-3 Susquehanna Valley Legion Baseball victory over Bloomsburg on Monday.

SELINSGROVE - Selinsgrove Speedway will present two sprint car racing specials this weekend, Friday and Saturday, June 29-30, offering nearly $30,000 in prize money for 358-360 sprint cars.

Friday night's race, which has an 8 p.m. start, will be the fourth event in the inaugural six-race, $120,000 Mach 1 Chassis Mid-Atlantic Championship Series for 358-360 sprint cars. The 25-lap main event will pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start out of a purse totaling $15,000. Track gates on Friday will open at 5:30 p.m., with warmups scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Three races in the series have produced three different winners. The opener at Selinsgrove on March 31 was won by Pat Cannon of Etters. Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove won the URC-sanctioned Jack Gunn Memorial Challenge Race at Selinsgrove on May 12. Daryn Pittman of Owasso, Okla., scored the single event of the series at the Lincoln Speedway last Wednesday.

In the series standings entering this Friday's race, Cannon leads the chase for the championship with 890 points over Mark Smith of Sunbury with 840 points. The top five includes Davie Franek of Wantage, N.J. (780), TJ Stutts of Liverpool (760), and Pittman (650). The top 10 finishers in the point standings will share an $8,000 point fund sponsored by Mach 1 Chassis of Mechanicsburg.

The speedway will swing back into action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with the annual running of the Middleswarth Potato Chips Firecracker 30 for 358 sprint cars. The 30-lap main event will pay $2,000 to win and $250 to start out of a purse totaling $12,975. Time trials, heats, and a B-main will be the format for qualifying for the Firecracker 30.

Past winners of the Firecracker race as a 40-lap contest include the late Jim Nace of Thompsontown (2002), Bob Beidleman of Walnutport (2003), Dave Calaman of Carlisle (2004), Nate Snyder of Halifax (2005), and Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove (2006). In 2007, the race was abbreviated to 30 laps and was won by Calaman. Scott Flammer of West Milford, N.J., (2008), Cannon (2009), Snyder (2010), and Logan Schuchart of Hanover (2011) are also past winners of the 30-lap event.

BLOOMSBURG - The big difference between South Columbia and the Shamokin-Mount Carmel Major Division all-stars in Tuesday's District 13 tournament opener was pretty plain - South Columbia's 4-5-6 hitters.

Matt Grozier, Julian Fleming and Cole Taylor are all big kids, and all three played like it. They were a combined 7-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored and seven runs batted in to lead South Columbia to a 7-3 win over Shamokin-Mount Carmel. Shamokin-Mount Carmel plays the loser of Thursday's Berwick-Danville game on Saturday in an elimination game at Bloomsburg's Town Park. Danville defeated Bloomsburg 15-1 in the first game last night.

"We played pretty well but we could have used a little more enthusiasm," said Shamokin-Mount Carmel manager Greg Rachau. "This is the first time for a lot of our kids and I thought maybe some of them were nervous."

If they were, they didn't play like it. Shamokin-Mount Carmel started the game by retiring South Columbia's first three batters in order, then taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Maura Fiamoncini walked, Nathan Miller hit a liner right between the legs of South Columbia third baseman Elijah Hoffman. Thomas Shultz doubled home Fiamoncini and Matthew Ziv singled to score Miller before South Columbia's starting pitcher, Grozier, retired the next two batters.

The middle of South Columbia's lineup began its damage in the second. Grozier walked and Fleming singled, and Taylor hit a single to score both.

Hoffman singled to start the third, Garrett Barlor walked and Grozier doubled to score Hoffman. Fleming then delivered an RBI single, and Taylor followed with his second two-run single.

Fleming had another run-scoring single in the fourth.

Grozier was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, Fleming was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and taylor was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Shamokin-Mount Carmel got another run in the third when Nathan Miller scored on a bang-bang play at home on an infield single by Matthew Ziv.

Shamokin-Mount Carmel had two runners on base in the sixth with a chance to cut the lead when Fiamonicini ended the game with a sharp line drive out to right field.

Ziv was 2-for-3 for Shamokin-Mount Carmel.

Grozier picked up the win and Shultz took the loss.

11-year-olds win

Shamokin-Mount Carmel's Junior Division (10-11) opened its tournament with a 15-2 win over Snyder County. Tommy Reisinger had two triples and a single, Avery Demko a double and single, Logan Wills a triple, and Max Tillett and Matt Dimmick singles for Shamokin-Mount Carmel.

Dimmick was the winning pitcher.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin-Mount Carmel Legion baseball coach Joe Varano isn't much for moral victories, but the way his team played against Danville on Wednesday, he still had to be a little pleased.

Danville, the leading team in the Susquehanna Valley American Legion League, scratched across the winning run in the eighth inning for a 2-1 win in a game that was probably the crispest game played at Bunker Hill in some time.

Both starting pitchers, Danville's Scott Heeter and Shamokin-Mount Carmel's Zach Tocyloski, pitched great and every run in the game had to be manufactured in some way. Each team made one error, neither of which was costly.

"That was a very well-played baseball game by two good teams," said Varano.

One reason, both Varano and Danville's veteran coach, Harold Alb-

ertson, agreed, is that the league is using wooden bats, and the game just isn't the same one that is played with aluminum bats. Pitchers have a fairer chance and batters have to do things the way they're supposed to be done and can't expect their strength to overcome bad habits.

"It's a different type of baseball than what they're used to," Varano said. "We're trying to get them to understand the game a little better and I think they're picking it up. We've been playing good baseball and that was the best team in the league (that beat us) just now."

Shamokin, which had won four of its last five games, dropped to 6-9 overall, 4-9 in the league, and Danville improved to 8-2 but it was obvious there wasn't that much difference between the teams, at least on this night.

Varano said he told Albertson before the game that wooden bats had evened things up a little, especially for younger teams like his which had trouble offensively.

Albertson agreed, and said it was a good thing.

"We had a 1-0 game earlier this week," said Albertson, who has always been known for teams that executed the little things, even when they had big hammers in the lineup. "Bunting is a big part of the game now, moving runners over. I love it. I've always been playing this kind of ball."

Tocyloski didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning, when Danville took a 1-0 lead. Consecutive singles by Jeff Ross and Bret Berg set up a sacrifice fly by Heeter to score Ross. Berg was gunned down at the plate by shortstop Austin Fry trying to score on a passed ball.

Shamokin-Mount Carmel tied the game in the sixth inning. Ryan Burns and Dan Lesko singled, and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Jones. Burns then scored on a groundout by Brody Young.

The home team had a chance to win in the seventh, getting two runners on base with one out on a walk to Michael Pupo, a sacrifice bunt by Mike Rodarmel and an intentional walk to Theo Deptula.

But the latter set up a double play opportunity and it paid off for Danville when Fry hit into a 6-3 twin killing to end the threat.

Adam Creasy walked to start the eighth for Danville, and was sacrificed up a base by Andrew Andreychik. Trevor Leitzel then delivered a single, only Danville's fourth hit, to drive in Creasy. Leitzel eventually reached third on a stolen base and Tyler Grubb walked, but Mason Fausnaught struck out and Leitzel was thrown out at third base by catcher Lesko trying to advance on a wild pitch.

Burns reached base on an error to start Shamokin-Mount Carmel's eighth inning and stole second, but reliever Kurt Mordan retired the next three batters.

"That's the first time he's pitched this year," Albertson said of Mordan. "We've been working with him and he may have pitched some JV ball."

Shamokin-Mount Carmel is off until Monday when it hosts Berwick.
