Indians make some noise

BLOOMSBURG - Shamokin's motto going into the District 4 swim meet was "Make some noise."

And while the Indians boys were leaving the pool at Bloomsburg University without any gold medals, they served notice to the rest of the district that they'll be a force to be reckoned with next year.

As it stands, the Indians still have a good chance to push two swimmers into the PIAA state meet based on times, but won't find that out for another two weeks.

Shamokin's relays also broke two school records in the process.

The District 4 girls meet is 10 a.m. today at Bloomsburg's Nelson Fieldhouse.

Juniors Scott Bradley and Kyle Koontz sit on the fence, with times good enough for medals at the district meet, but a question mark hanging over the rest of their season.

Bradley took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.78, four seconds less than his seeded time coming in. He also grabbed a bronze medal in the 500-yard free.

Koontz jumped up from being seeded sixth to third by shaving half a second off his seeded time in the 50-free. He also won his heat and placed fifth in the 100 free.

"They were amazing," Shamokin head coach Connie Boyer said. "They worked really hard this whole season, and they believed in themselves.

"They're both team leaders, and they got each other to think good thoughts before their races."

The pair were also part of the school record breaking 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

The 400 relay team of Koontz, Bradley, Troy Grinaway and Mike Rodarmel bested the old record by four seconds, while the 200 relay team of Koontz, Bradley, Jon Vanaskie and Steve Bressi just got under the old record by .17 seconds.

Mount Carmel Area also sent swimmers to the district meet with Michael Swatski finishing the highest among the Red Tornadoes with an eighth place in the 100-yard backstroke.

With the diving portion of the meet still to come next week, Bloomsburg, which took five gold medals as a team, leads handily, with Shamokin in fifth and Mount Carmel at 14th.
