The Tri-Valley roster lists Blake Bowman at 5-foot-8, 160 pounds.
That might be generous. Coaches often talk about "program weights," and this might be a grand example of that.
No matter, though.
Whatever his size, Bowman will likely present Line Mountain with its biggest challenge on the field when the Eagles (4-1, 3-0 TVC) visit Hegins tonight for a Twin Valley Conference matchup with the Bulldogs (3-2, 2-2).
"He is one of the most dynamic athletes in the league," Line Mountain head coach Mike Carson said of Bowman. "He's a small package of dynamite.
"He's fast, quick, strong and fearless. He's not the least bit concerned about contact."
Bowman started the season as a running back, but when starting quarterback Dalton Miller sustained an injury, Bowman moved to that position.
"Against Halifax, they played the whole game with him (Bowman) at quarterback in the Wildcat," Carson said.
And in that game, a 26-14 Bulldogs' victory last week, Bowman was the show. He rushed 36 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns, and completed four of eight passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
"You have to defend him, that's the key," Carson said. "They do a lot of different things, and that causes some concerns in preparation and performance. We have to be disciplined."
That being said, so will the Bulldogs' defense.
The Eagles own what might be the Twin Valley's most dynamic offense. Running back Kyle Troutman has gained 789 yards and scored 11 touchdowns on only 59 carries. Quarterback Marty Beninsky has 11 touchdowns and 565 yards on 49 carries. Beninsky has also completed 31 of 63 passes for 511 yards and five scores.
The Eagles have averaged 46 points per outing through the first five games, including a low of 25 in their only loss to Southern Columbia.
Tri-Valley has scored 34 and 26, respectively, in its victories over Newport and Halifax, but the Bulldogs have been held to two touchdowns or less in their other three games.
"It's a little hard to get a read on them," Carson said. "They've been affected by small numbers and they've had some kids get hurt."
