SHAMOKIN - Once-beaten Shamokin Area earned the top-seed for the District 4 Class AAA girls basketball playoffs, but won't open play until next week, facing off against the winner of a quarterfinal matchup between No. 4 Danville and No. 5 Mifflinburg in the semifinals.
District playoff action for local teams opens Tuesday night with a Southern Columbia boys-girls doubleheader at Milton High School. The Tigers girls, seeded No. 7 in Class AA, face off against No. 10 Warrior Run at 6 p.m., while the boys, seeded No. 10, follow at 7:30 p.m. against No. 7 South Williamsport.
The winner of the Southern-Warrior Run girls game advances to play No. 2 Mount Carmel Area, Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Shamokin Area. That game will be the second game of a doubleheader that features the Line Mountain girls, No. 2 in Class A, facing No. 7 Millville.
In another Class A girls game, No. 4 Lourdes Regional will meet No. 5 Mansfield, Friday at 6 p.m. at Montoursville.
Shamokin Area, the area's other boys team to qualify for the postseason, opens Thursday. The Indians, seeded No. 6 in Class AAA, face No. 3 Shikellamy in a single game at 7 p.m. at Danville. The Indians and Braves split their regular season meetings in Heartland I action.
