H.S. SPORTS: 4 Line Mountain wrestlers advance to Top Hat semifinals

WILLIAMSPORT - Line Mountain advanced four wrestlers through the first half of the quarterfinal round at the Top Hat (Tom Best Memorial) Tournament at Williamsport Area High School.

Collin Klinger (113), Cameron Newman (120), Kenny Boyer (138), and Brendan Renn (195) advanced through the quarterfinals, although the later weights were still to be wrestled in that round. Klinger pinned Seth Andrus of Central Mountain in 5:13, and Newman had a major decision over Jack Bennett of Schuylkill Valley, 13-5, after they won first round bouts. Boyer had a 9-0 major decision over Elizabethtown's Chad Rosenberger. Renn decisioned Tristan Choate of Montoursville, 1-0.

Other Eagle winners in the first round were Brian Earlston (126), Blake Carl (132), and Rogen Shaffer (220).

Eight Tornadoes advance

BLOOMSBURG - Mount Carmel advanced eight wrestlers through the first round of the Darren Klingerman Invitational Wrestling Tournament Friday.

Shane Gudonis (120), Lane Tanney (126), Dion Watson (132), Tommy McDonald (145), Blake Panko (160), Mitchell Fletcher (182), Allen Yancoskie (195) and Wes Shurock (220) advanced for the Red Tornadoes, who were tied for 10th place in the team standings with GAR and Tamaqua, all with 16 points.

Host Bloomsburg had the team lead with 37.5 points, followed by Pottsville (31) and Pine Grove (28).

HERSEY - Shamokin opened its season on the losing end to host Hershey in the semifinals of the Hershey Tipoff Classic.

Six-foot-nine inch Dylan Painter scored 27 points and 6-4 Taylor Sweeney added 13 points for Hershey, which withstood a 26-20 rally by Shamokin in the fourth quarter.

Jakob Weaver paced the Indians with 17 points. Ryan Sebasovich had 15 and Isaiah Reiprich 10.

Shamokin will play Cumberland Valley, a 77-68 loser to William Allen in the other semifinal, in tonight's consolation.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Paul Ahrensfield and Larry Czeponis each scored nine points, and Jordan Fobia and Billy Allen had eight points each as the Red aiders opened their season with a win over Gillingham Charter in the semifinals of the Lourdes Tipoff Tournament.

Lourdes (1-0) will play Meadowbrook Christian, a 65-58 winner over Tri-Valley in the other semifinal, in the championship game today.

POTTSVILLE - Sarah Corse-Campion won two individual events and swam on two winning relays as the Crimson Tide topped the Indians at Ned Hampford Natatorium.

Corse-Campion won the 100 fly and 100 back, while Madeline Consugar took first in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Taylor Young (200 IM), Megan Berdanier (50 freestyle) and Katie Deegan (100 free) added individual wins for Pottsville.

Katie Faust (diving) and Samantha Carpenter (100 breast) recorded victories for Shamokin.

POTTSVILLE - Josh Marx, Charlie Botto, Tanner Steinhart and Nick Kerby each won an individual event and swam on two winning relays as the Crimson Tide downed the Indians in a non-league meet at the Ned Hampford Natatorium.

Kerby won the 200 freestyle, Marx placed first in the 50 freestyle, Botto took top honors in the 100 backstroke and Steinhart hit the wall first in the 100 breaststroke. Michael Smerlick (200 IM), Michael Logothetides (100 fly) and Jacob Spece (500 free) added individual wins for Pottsville, which swept the relays.

Jon Koons (diving) and George Zalar (100 free) recorded victories for Shamokin.
