FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Spartans seek to clinch unbeaten season

North Schuylkill has already clinched the Anthracite Football League title so no matter what happens tonight against Panther Valley, that's a done deal.

But realistically, the 1-8 Panthers don't figure to give the unbeaten Spartans (9-0) much cause for concern.

The Panthers, coached by Matt Davis, have been competitive in some games, but have had trouble producing offensive results. If you subtract the 33 points they scored in their 33-21 win over Shenandoah Valley, they're averaging just 5.5 points per game in their other games, and have been shut out four times.

Davis has used three different players at quarterback, all about equally, but Ali Capobianco, Tristan Blasko and Matthew Hudicka have combined to throw for just 417 yards and three touchdowns, with 18 interceptions.

Running has been tough, too. Their leading ball carrier is Rian Shuback, with 246 yards on 60 carries.

With so much trouble offensively, the Panthers' defense has been spending a lot of time on the field. Lineback Anthony Vavra has the numbers to prove it - 100 tackles in eight games, or 12.5 per game.

North Schuylkill will try complete its fourth unbeaten regular season since 2009 but first since 2011, and ensure its number one seeding for the District 11-AA playoffs.

John Rupinski has rushed for 1,275 yards and 15 touchdowns, and quarterback Bobby Grigas has 1,543 yards total offense. He has thrown for 18 touchdowns with just two interceptions and has added five touchdowns rushing. Receivers Tevin Murray (29 catches, 624 yards, 10 TDs) and Richie Zahodnick (18-416-6) give Grigas two excellent targets.
