A trip to Camp Victory near Millville a few years ago led New York Giants fullback and Southern Columbia graduate Henry Hynoski to organize, along with Southern football coach Jim Roth, the Hyno-Tiger Youth Football Camp, which will be held Saturday at Southern Columbia to benefit Camp Victory and Southern football.
Hynoski and several of his Giants teammates will be featured instructors at the one-day camp, which will run from 9 a.m until mid-afternoon at Southern.
"We actually talked about doing this last year," Hynoski said Tuesday. "But then I got hurt and that kind of put a damper on things. One of the things we were interested in doing was raising money for something we both felt strongly about. I went to Camp Victory a couple of years ago and it really struck me. Those kids need as much help as they can get and we both felt that was a good thing to raise money for."
Camp Victory is a camp near Millville for children with chronic illnesses and physical and emotional needs.
Camp attendees on Saturday will be able to work out with and get instruction from Hynoski and several of his teammates. Hynoski said there will probably be four other Giants players at the camp, although he didn't want to release
any names because he still wasn't sure what schedules some of them had at this point.
Pre-registration for the camp ended June 1 but student-athletes from grades 3 through 9 for the upcoming school year can still register from now until Saturday for $50. Cost includes an autograph session with the players at 4 p.m.
Hynoski suffered a knee injury in an offseason workout in May, 2013, rehabilitated that by opening day, started three games, then injured a shoulder and was put on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
Now, having signed a one-year, $1 million contract during the offseason, Hynoski said he's ready and raring to go for the 2014 season.
"I feel great, probably the strongest I've felt in my career," he said after the team's post-draft mini-camps and OTA (organized team activities).
Hynoski said the NFC East will have some different looks this season, but that things still remain basically the same.
"That (change) is every year," he said. "We (the Giants) are learning a new offense, with new terminology. We have some great guys coming in and I'm real excited about the opportunity to play again."
Registration forms for Saturday's camp can be found in any Southern Columbia school office, on the SCA football website (www.scatigerfootball.org), or by calling 570-356-3460. The camp is open to students from any school district.
