Fry leads SAHS

HUGHESVILLE - Austin Fry belted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, erasing a one-run deficit and lifting Shamokin Area to a 5-4 victory over Hughesville in Heartland II baseball action Monday.

Fry finished with three hits and knocked in three runs. Mike Rodarmel added two singles, and Theo Deptula contributed a double to the Indians' attack.

Ryan Burns worked a complete game with six strikeouts to pick up the victory.

COAL TOWNSHIP - In a Schuylkill League doubleheader at Bunker Hill, the Bulldogs topped Lourdes 15-0 and 16-2.

Michael Gilger and Mike Menapace hit safely for the Raiders in the opener, while Anthony Pennypacker led the Lourdes attack with a double and single in the second game.

HALIFAX - The Eagles' playoff hopes took another hit when the Wildcats' Hunter Rowe fired a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the Tri-Valley League victory.

It was the first of eight games this week for Line Mountain, which was led offensively by Matt Bitting with two singles.

ESPY - Central scored three times in the bottom of the fourth, wiping out a 3-1 Red Tornadoes lead in the Heartland II matchup.

Mount Carmel (6-10) must now win its four remaining games to qualify for the District 4 Class AA playoffs.

Danny Lesko with a double and single, and Mark Minnig with two singles led the Red Tornadoes offensively.

Line Mountain sweeps

MANDATA - Maggie Fessler pitched all 11 innings of Line Mountain's second game with Millersburg and the Eagles won a pair of one-run games over the Indians, 7-6 and 8-7.

Fessler had 15 strikeouts in the second game. Trailing 6-5 in the seventh inning of that game, Line Mountain tied it to force extra innings, and then scored two in the bottom of the 11th after Millersburg put a run across in the top of the inning.

Fessler had five hits between the two games. Jenna Wheary, who won the first game, had two hits and three RBI, and Kasey Long, Emily Wingert and Sara Lahr all had multi-hit afternoons.

TURBOTVILLE - The Defenders scored all five runs, courtesy of four Mount Carmel Area errors, in the fourth inning for the Heartland II victory.

Maura Frasch led the Tornadoes' offense with a triple. Tori Chapman and Kelsey Resendes also hit safely.

Ashley Koschoff turned in a solid performance on the mound, despite taking the loss. In a complete game, she scattered four singles and walked only one, while striking out two.
