SHAMOKIN - Dennis Leschinsky, of 171 Vermont Drive, Kulpmont, was named the first-place winner of Week 2 of The News-Item Football Contest.

Leschinsky was the only entrant that picked 13 out of 14 games correctly, earning the $50 gift certificate from the participating merchants in the contest.

Three entrants correctly picked 12 out of 14 games, so the tie breaker of guessing the most points scored by a single team was used. Blair D. Faust, of 1565 Elm Road, Shamokin, was the closest, guessing 48 points and earning second place and a $25 gift certificate. The top score was 59 points by Oregon in its 59-10 win over Virginia Saturday.

The next closest guess was 42 points by David Friday, of 20 Sheridan St., Coal Township, which was good enough for third place and earned him a $15 gift certificate. The other competitor who picked 12 out of 14 games was Robert Handerahan, of 304 Center St., Mount Carmel. Handerahan and the three winners are now eligible for the $200 grand prize drawing at the end of the season.

Scores from this week's games are: Jersey Shore 33, Shamokin 14; Oregon 59, Virginia 10; Southern Columbia 58, Montgomery 6; Maine 24, U. Mass 13; Mount Carmel 30, Lewisburg 14; Georgia 41, South Carolina 30; Michigan 41, Notre Dame 30; Titans 16, Steelers 9; Millersburg 28, Line Mountain 26; Virginia Tech 45, Western Carolina 3; Boston College 24, Wake Forest 10; Penn State 45, Eastern Michigan 7; North Schuylkill 48, Minersville 0; Auburn 38, Arkansas State 10.
