Perhaps the most ironic aspect of Brett Veach's move to Kansas City is the fact that the former Mount Carmel Red Tornado is now living in Tornado Alley.
The recent rash of tornadoes through the midsection of the country has been a hot topic for Veach and the other transplanted Philadelphians now with the Kansas City Chiefs, he said.
"When I got here, everybody gave me advice on the weather stuff. I'm learning about it all," Veach said, laughing. "There have been some tornadoes in the area, but Kansas City is really just outside of what they really consider Tornado Alley. We're on the Kansas-Missouri border, and the people out here say most of the tornadoes are on the other side of Missouri."
Still, one can't be too careful, and Veach was willing to take advice from any source. Told by a reporter that he had once heard that when the sky goes green, it's time to head to the basement, Veach said, "I haven't heard that one, but I'll remember it."
As for the Kansas City metropolitan area itself, Veach likes what he sees.
"I like it out here. It's a little different from what I'm used to but I like it," Veach said. "The food is great - barbecue, burnt ends, pork ribs, I'm eating it all."
Veach said he has also been impressed with the people around the Chiefs' organization, including the players.
"It's a good group of guys," he said.
