Lourdes bounces back with win over East Juniata

MOUNT CARMEL - Lourdes Regional bounced back from a loss to Minersville by beating East Juniata 13-2 in girls softball Saturday and qualifying for the District Four tournament in the process.

Emily Long hit a home run and double, scored four runs and drove in four, winning pitcher CharLee Rosini went 4-for-4 with a double and triple, and drove in three runs, and Caity Funk was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.

Rosini gave up one hit in five innings, struck out three and walked three.

Lourdes improved to 10-4 overall in the non-league game.

Shamokin 10 Line Mountain 0

COAL TOWNSHIP - In the resolution of a suspended game from earlier this season, Shamokin finished off Line Mountain in their non-conference game.

Helena Supsic and Olivia Bonshock each homered for the Indians, who moved one game above .500 at 7-6.

Track and field

Joraskie wins Dallastown discus

DALLASTOWN - Mount Carmel's Eric Joraskie won the discus and finished second in the shot at the Dallastown Track and Field Invitational.

Joraskie's winning throw in the discus was 160 feet, 4 inches.

Rob Varano took a pair of seconds, in the javelin and pole vault. Also taking seconds were Elijah Duran in the triple jump and Dondre Glasper in the 400.

Rarig wins at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN - Southern Columbia's Luke Rarig won the 110-meter high hurdles and finished second in the long jump to highlight Southern Columbia performers at the 16th annual Lock Haven High School Classic.

Rarig won the high hurdles in 15.04 seconds and did 20-10 in the long jump. He was also sixth in the 300 hurdles (41.21).

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the 16th inning after Hamburg scored two in the top of the inning to win the non-league game.

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - North Schuylkill won its second game of the afternoon in a slugfest with Mount Carmel.

The Red Tornadoes' Jayson Stellar homered and drove in seven runs, but North Schuylkill scored 12 runs in the first three innings and never looked back.

Track and field

McSurdy, Green set records

PINE GROVE - North Schuylkill's Dan McSurdy was a double individual winner, setting a meet record in the 100-meter dash, and ran on two winning relays, and the Spartans' Carter Green set a meet record in the girls discus at the 9th annual Pine Grove Invitational.

McSurdy won the 100 in 10.7 seconds and also won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.5 seconds. McSurdy, Ethan Motsney, Matt Gownley and Jordan Shinkus combined to win the 1600 relay in 3:36.1, and McSurdy, Motsney, Gownley and Kris Karlonis teamed to win the 400 relay in 44.7 seconds. Motsney also won the 200 (22.6) and North Schuylkill finished second in the team race behind Jim Thorpe.

Green threw the discus 139 feet to break her own meet record and Carly Gregas won the high jump (5-2).

Other area winners were Shamokin's Chris Petraskie in the boys high jump (6-0) and Line Mountain's Colleen Troutman, who won the girls 400 for Upper Dauphin in 1:01.0.

North Schuylkill 10 Panther Valley 0

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - C.J. Steinhilber and Derek Reese hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to spark the Spartans to a six-inning Division I victory over the Panthers.

Matt Smarkanic went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple in the first and a two-run double in the sixth, while Tom Gallagher contributed an RBI double in the first and a two-run triple in the sixth.

Bobby Grigas tossed a five-hit shutout to get the win for the Spartans.

Softball

North Schuylkill 12 Panther Valley 0

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - Kayla Bolinsky hit a two-run triple in the second inning and Tiffany Lapotsky hit a two-run double in the fourth to lead the Spartans' offense in a five-inning Division I victory over the Panthers.

Christie Hutira struck out eight against two walks in hurling a one-hit shutout.

Shamokin 13 Lewisburg 2

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin pounded out 11 hits and 13 runs in a non-conference victory over Lewisburg.

Natalie Wolfe, Jenny Hornberger and Olivia Bonshock all had a double and a single each for the Indians.
