COAL TOWNSHIP - Kodack's Plumbing, Klebon's Insurance, James Pizza and McFarland's, Pottsville, recorded victories in the opening round of the 10th annual Salvation Army Benefit Adult Basketball Tournament Friday night at Shamokin Area Junior-Senior High School. Zalar's Roofing won by forfeit over Central Penn Physical Therapy.
Action will resume today at 8 a.m. at both the high school gym and at the Shamokin Area Annex gym. There will be 13 games played at the high school gym today continuing until 8 p.m. Eight games will be played at the annex today continuing until 3 p.m.
Parkansky's, Mount Carmel, and the Outsiders (Line Mountain) open tourney play today at 8 a.m. at the high school, and E. Mortgage Management, Lebanon, and Permanent Solutions open play today at 8 a.m. at the annex gym. Tire Ranch opens today at 9 a.m. at the high school.
The three-day, 14-team event will run through Sunday afternoon.
Chris Venna, Shamokin Area Junior-Senior High School principal, and Brian Persing, Shamokin Area School Board member, tourney co-chairmen, and members of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, said the tourney is operating the same as in previous years with a double elimination format. Teams with one loss will still be able to make the tourney finals.
All proceeds benefit the Salvation Army.
Kodack's Plumbing 51 Moore's Renovations 43
John Miller paced Kodack's with 11 points. Rich Carsto and Dennis Kodack added nine each. For Moore's, Mike Keefer was high with 16. Hoss Moore also hit double figures with 12.
Kodack's will play Tire Ranch today at 9 a.m. at the high school gyn. Moore's plays at 12 noon today at the annex gym.
Klebon's Insurance 58, Tenacious D 39
D. Ware and J. Britto led the scoring for Klebon's with 13 and 11, respectively. Eric Kaelberer topped the losers with eight points, Klebon's will meet Zalar's Roofing today at 9 a.m. at the annex. Tenacious D will play today at 2 p.m. at the high school.
James Pizza 93, Gun Town 47
Four players scored in double figures for the Pizzamen, led by Dan Rathmel with 23 points. Tyler Rathmel followed with 18, while Wes Griffith and Foster Renn scored 15 each. For Gun Town, Justin Heaton led his team offensively with 14. James Pizza will battle McFarland's today at 10 a.m. at the high school gym. Gun Town plays today at 11 a.m. at the high school against Carsto's.

Three players scored in double figures for the victors. Haigler led the trio with 15. Dave Wilson and Derek McFarland added 12 each. Steve Carsto led the way for his team with 15. McFarland's plays James Pizza today at 10 a.m. at the high school. Carsto's and Gun Town meet at 11 a.m. at the high school.
