CATAWISSA R.R. - Last week it was Mount Carmel's boys seeing an end to their 22-meet winning streak at the hands of Milton.

On Wednesday, it was time for the Red Tornadoes to return the favor.

Mount Carmel used the field in track and field to overcome Southern Columbia's advantage on the track and down the Tigers, 79-71, ending Southern's 23-meet winning streak. With Southern, last season's Heartland Conference Division III champions, moving to Division II this season, it means that division race should be a dandy, since Milton is also in the division.

"Milton is for real, but they already have some injuries, and Southern is outstanding. This was a real big win for us," said Mount Carmel coach Mike Farronato.

Led by triple winner Rob Varano, and double winners Eric Joraskie and Elijah Duran, Mount Carmel won all seven field events and posted a 45-18 advantage in those events.

Varano won the javelin, high jump and pole vault, Joraskie the shot put and discus and Duran the long and triple jumps. Duran's wins were particularly important. He was coming off an injury in the Milton meet, and he beat district champion Luke Rarig in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 7½ inches.

"Elijah has a continuing injury and we were cautious with him against Milton," Farronato said. "He didn't compete on Saturday (at Selinsgrove) and he wasn't real happy about that. But he was real mature about it and shadowed his younger brother down there all day, so he made a positive out of a negative and he came back real strong tonight.

"We fought a lot harder for seconds and thirds today than we did against Milton. Part of that was that we weren't real sure where some of our kids should be in the first meet. Today we found a hurdler (Treyvon White). We were fighting so hard for seconds and thirds on the track that it carried over to the field events, too."

Mount Carmel only had two wins on the track. Dondre Glasper won the 400 and anchored the 1600-meter relay team to victory.

Andrew Steely was a triple winner for the Tigers, who had their first dual meet of the season, winning the 1600, 800 and 3200 meters with solid times of 4:40.5, 2:10.5 and 10:28.6, respectively. He also ran on the winning 3200-meter relay team. Rarig won both hurdles races and Joe Kleman won the 100 and 200. Those latter two also ran on the 400-meter relay team.

Southern's girls gave new head coach Kristen Diehl her first win with an 86-64 triumph over the Red Tornadoes (0-2). Southern's girls also won Division III last season.

Bailey Bzdak and Teanna Shutt were double winners for the Tigers. Bzdak won the 100 meters and triple jump, and Shutt took the 3200 and the pole vault. Other winners for Southern were Elyse Noll (300 hurdles), Gabrielle Delbo (800) and Jillian Oley (high jump).

Ali Varano led the Red Tornadoes with wins in the 400 and long jump, and also ran legs on Mount Carmel's winning 3200 and 1600-meter relay teams. Other winners for the Red Tornadoes were Jenna Jurasich (100 high hurdles), Lauren Hause (1600), Rachel Schultz (200), Isabella Stellar (javelin), Amber Kogut (shot put) and Jen Bolick (discus).
