MOUNT CARMEL - The Ed Romance Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will induct six new members during the organization's 35th anniversary banquet, March 23 at 2 p.m. at The Brady Fire Company Hall in Ranshaw.
Inductees to the class of 2012 are:
Robert Chuprinski - An outstanding tackle for Coach Jazz Diminick on the 1969 Eastern Conference football championship team, he earned scholarships to C.W. Post and Temple University.
Jeff Costello - An outstanding football player at Wilkes University in early 90s, Costello was an Academic All-MAC selection for three years after starring at Mount Carmel for coach Jazz Diminick.
Lawrence Czeponis - A two-year starter at offensive guard for Bucknell Bison, he was a three-year star at Mount Carmel Area and earned honorable mention recognition on the all-state team. Czeponis was also a district qualifier in shot and discus.
Mike Trocki - He spent 21 season as coach of the Mount Carmel Area softball team, winning the only district championship in school history in 1992.
Alfred 'Sam" Teufel - He was 1948 grad of Mount Carmel High School who was named Most Valuable Athlete. He was District 4 champion in the mile and 880-yard runs in 1947 and 48.
Bob Witowski - An outstanding basketball player at Kulpmont High School, he graduated in 1959 as the career scoring leader. Witowski was selected to the AP and UPI honorable mention all-state teams and played at Kansas Junior College and Yankton College.
The chapter will also honor the following scholar athletes:
Rob Varano - the Joseph Jazz Diminick Male Scholar Athlete.
Cathy Fletcher - the Joseph Wasilewski Female Scholar Athlete.
Eric Joraskie - the St Pauline Visintainer Scholar,.
Tyler Kwiatkowski - the Russ and Joanne Cesari Scholar.
Tyler Holleran - the Jim Bach Scholar Athlete.
Special achievement awards will be presented to Joraskie in recognition of his being named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers First Team All-State football team, and Christina Perles, who reached the 1000-point plateau in girls basketball
The chapter will also recognize Paul Semicek for his contribution in bringing national recognition to the borough of Mount Carmel and the Mount Carmel Area School District as the leader of the Mounties.
In honor of its 35th anniversary year, the chapter will recognize all past inductees at a special brunch, Friday night, March 22, at The Village Town. Tickets for the banquet will be available until Thursday, March 2, at Community Pharmacy or by calling Frank Niglio at 373-3861.
