MOUNT CARMEL - Hughesville won the final three bouts, two by pins, to defeat Mount Carmel, 36-20, in the final dual meet of the season for the Red Tornadoes Thursday at Mount Carmel.
Mount Carmel (5-12) closed the gap to 21-20 after four straight wins from 145 through 171, but the Spartans' heavyweights were too much to handle.
Ethan Showers (19-6) took an 8-2 win over Derek Urbanavage at 189, Brad Poust (13-1) pinned Dan Karpinski in 23 seconds at 215 and Derek Earnest (25-6) pinned Seth Stablewski in 2:52 at 285.
The Red Tornadoes had a good run to make the meet close. Dylan Hornberger (18-3) used a third-period escape for a 1-0 win over D.J. Foresman (17-14) at 145, Sage Stablewski pinned Sam Hunter at 152, Meyrick Lamb (18-6) took a 14-5 major decision over Kurt Hiller at 160, and Brent Przekop (20-5)
was an 8-0 winner at 171 over Quinton Cooper.
"We have some kids who are in the process of cutting a weight class go back up to wrestle tonight, and they did well," said Mount Carmel head coach Randy Reidler. "I'm not too sure what our lineup is going to be like (for the postseason), but the kids we expect to do well looked good.
Meyrick Lamb, in particular, opened things up a little. He had some real good takedowns and showed what he could do.
"We've been trying to get some good matchups for our better kids and I think that's been getting them ready."
The meet opened with a forfeit for Hughesville, then two close bouts, with the teams splitting. Mike Saukaitis (16-12) got an escape and takedown in the third period for a 3-1 win over Ethan Barnes at 125, and Tyler Snyder (21-10) used a late tilt for three backpoints and a 5-4 comeback win at 130 over Nick Dusendschine (21-6).
But consecutive pins by Kyle Barnes (28-3) and Devon Shannon at 135 and 140 gave Hughesville (9-7) a 21-3 lead.
