TURBOTVILLE - There have been lots of accomplishments for Southern Columbia through the years, but Friday at Warrior Run the Tigers had a rare first.
Senior Jake Becker caught a 16-yard pass from little brother Nick Becker, a freshman, for the Tigers' first touchdown en route to a 50-19 Southern romp over Warrior Run.
"Earlier in the week when they told him he was going to be quarterback, I was a little nervous for him, but then I thought, 'It's Warrior Run and we'll run the ball a lot,'" Jake Becker said.
"But then Coach Roth came out passing the ball and called a play to me. I saw the ball in the air and then I realized after I scored that my brother threw it. They said it was the first time in SC history that a brother threw to a brother. I think it's pretty cool."
The rest of the game was pretty cool too for the Tigers, from a temperature standpoint, a dramatic difference from the sweltering conditions Southern faced when the season opened at Pius X.
What hasn't changed all season is the result for Southern. The Tigers finished the regular season 10-0, the seventh time its happended in Southern history.
Going into the playoffs, Southern showed both good and bad versions of itself.
The good was Nick Becker, who completed 5-of-8 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns in his first real varsity action.
After the scoring toss to his brother, Becker connected with Bryce Parry for a 68-yard touchdown and later thew a 43-yard score to Matt Lupold.
Becker also added 18 yards rushing and played a little defense when the starters were pulled.
"He's a good player and he's going to have a nice career," Southern Columbia head coach Jim Roth said. "He's got three years in front of him. He's good enough to start on varsity now and he showed that tonight. It's a nice situation with him coming back as a sophomore next year."
Also being tallied in the good column for the Tigers was special teams.
Southern scored twice in the second half on kick returns.
The first was a 75-yard kickoff return by Joey Kleman after the Warriors scored their first touchdown.
The second excellent special teams play was a 38-yard punt return for a touchdown by Brad Noll.
"We played well on special teams and that's a good sign going into the playoffs," Roth said. "We have some skill kids that can run and make big plays."
The bad for Southern came on three plays. The defense allowed a 39-yard completion in the first quarter but then stopped the Warriors cold.
The Tigers' defense also held the Warriors after a 58-yard run by Mark Blanchard.
Southern was not as lucky keeping the Defenders out of the end zone when Garrett Moser threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Derek Keiser.
But on the whole, Roth has been pleased with the way his defense is improving week after week.
"It was the type of game coming in, knowing what the teams record was and I'm sure we didn't have the same level that we're going to have next week," Roth said. "I thought we did some things where we picked up from last week and we were mainly concerned with the offensive line. The last few weeks the defense has really seemed to pick it up."
Adam Feudale led the Tigers with 83 yards rushing and scored once.
