COAL TOWNSHIP - Hughesville's Brittany Snyder scored a hat trick, and the Spartans twice bunched two goals together in a short span in the first half to down Shamokin, 4-0, as the Indians ended their season with a 5-13 overall record Wednesday at Kemp Memorial Stadium.

The Spartans (10-7) used their speed to get breakaway goals. Snyder beat defenders unassisted for her first goal at the 9:02 mark, and less than two minutes later, Megan Shaner took a beautiful pass from Melanie Santo to make it 2-0.

The Indians settled down defensively for 15 minutes before Snyder, who now has 28 goals on the season, struck again. She scored first with an assist from Carlie Shaner at the 25:50 mark, then scored on her own again just 1:11 later.

Despite the barrage, Shamokin goalie Brianna Martin kept the Indians in the contest with 19 saves, including several very good ones, and the defense tightened and allowed no scores in the second half.

Offensively, the Indians were hampered by the absence of center striker Brandi Segura, one of their leading scorers. The senior missed the final game of her career with a leg injury.

"We have some speed," Shamokin coach Matt Witmer said, motioning to Segura. "Unfortunately, she wasn't playing tonight and we just don't have enough bodies to make up.

"But we played a pretty good second half."

Witmer said his team kept its spirits high this season despite a rash of injuries late in the year. Shamokin only dressed 15 players for the last few games.

"Everybody's leaving here with a smile on their face," he said. "We played pretty well this year. Monday night down at Southern they (the Tigers) didn't score until the last 10 minutes. Now we have to get some more people."

Hughesville will compete in the District 4-AA tournament.
