Tornadoes closing in on playoffs

MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel girls' soccer moved to within one game a District 4 playoff berth with a decisive 8-1 victory over Line Mountain Saturday.

Ali Varano scored the first three goals of the game and had four overall for the Red Tornadoes, while Abby Chapman scored a goal and had three assists and Jen Bolick had two goals and an assist.

Casey London scored the only goal for the Eagles.

Southern Columbia 2 Hughesville 1

HUGHESVILLE - Southern Columbia's Ally Stavinski tied the Tigers' Heartland Conference Division II game with Hughesville with just 1:32 left in the second half.

Mackenzie Clark gave the Tigers the win not long after with a goal off an assist by Haley Levan in overtime. The Tigers' record improved to 11-4.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin's Danielle Reed and Rachel Poplaski scored within 31 seconds of each other early in the first half and the Indians' defense made the lead stick in a non-league win over North Schuylkill.

Devvon Gallie added a second-half goal for the Indians and Sydney Casey scored the only Spartans' goal.

HEGINS - Rieley Reed had a hat trick, while Brittany Smeltz added a goal and two assists as the Bulldogs rolled past the Red Raiders in a Schuylkill League Division II contest at Bulldog Stadium.

Addie Snyder also had three assists for Tri-Valley, which finished the regular season without a loss in its final 11 games, including eight shutouts.

The Bulldogs also set a record for regular-season wins. The previous best was a 11-6-1 mark in 2010.

CATAWISSA R.R. - Southern Columbia's Dylan Swank's goal midway through the second half tied the game, but Central scored just five minutes later to win the non-league matchup.

Southern Columbia (8-7-1) has two games left to win one and qualify for the playoffs.

HEGINS - Taylor Troutman notched 17 kills and eight digs as the Dawgs routed the Red Raiders 25-5, 25-6, 25-10 in a non-league match.

Haley Deibert added 31 assists and five digs for Tri-Valley (14-2).

Tri-Valley won JV 2-0.

Shamokin 3 Minersville 0

COAL TOWNSHIP - Olivia Bonshock had seven kills and seven aces as Shamokin defeated Minersville in straight sets, 25-10, 25-22 and 25-10.

Kelsey Yacko added 14 kills for the Indians, while Caity Pancher had two kills and eight aces. Ashley Huxta chipped in with 12 assists for the Indians.
