Raiders edged by Bears

MOUNT CARMEL - Mahanoy Area pushed a single run across in the top of the seventh, then kept Lourdes from scoring in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie and record a 4-3 non-league softball victory over the Red Raiders.

Lourdes had more offense, with nine hits compared to four for the Bears, but Mahanoy Area made the most of it's chances.

Jocelyn Darrup led the Raiders with two singles, while Peyton Klembara and CharLee Rosini had a triple each. Emily Long contributed a double.

Ashley Hullihan picked up the victory. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.

Rosini was tagged with the loss. She struck out eight and walked three.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Sarah Watkins scored the winning run in the top of the third when Taryn Beaver walked with the bases loaded in the Heartland I matchup.

Olivia Bonshock and Jenny Hornberger had two singles each to pace the Indians.

CATAWISSA R.R. - Mallory Tomaschick belted a home run and two singles, while pitching five solid innings in leading the Tigers to the victory over the Knights.

Taylor Hoffman knocked home two runs on the strength of three singles, and Kayla Lavella added a double and single.

Tomaschick struck out 10 in earning the victory.

COAL TOWNSHIP - David Williams won the 100, 200 and long jump, and Shamokin won all three relays to nip the Bulldogs in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division I meet.

Other Shamokin winners were Brandon Nash (400), Zach Santey (300 hurdles), Brandon Mendoza (800) and and Dante Picarelli (high jump).

Cody Allen (1600, 3200) and Justin Norman (shot put, discus) were double winners for Jersey Shore.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Despite having three individual double winners, the Indians couldn't compete with Jersey Shore's depth in the Heartland Athletic Conference Division I meet. The Bulldogs swept three events and took first and second in three others.

Brandi Segura (100, 200), Molly McDevitt (400, 800) and Renea Broscious (shot put, discus) were double winners for Shamokin. Also winning for the Indians were Anna Summers (1600) and Alaina Petrovich (triple jump).
