Mount Carmel and Lourdes, congratulations, you won District 4 titles.

Line Mountain, you're headed to the state playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

All the net cutting, and celebrating aside, there's still work to be done if you don't want the season to end with crocodile tears.

The games people remember start in earnest today, with Mount Carmel playing Mid-Valley in Danville at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the PIAA Class AA state playoffs.

Saturday brings back-to-back games of interest with both Lourdes and Line Mountain, the District 4 Class A champ and runner-up, respectively, playing at Shamokin.

Line Mountain opens the Saturday action with a 3 p.m. game against District 11 runner-up Marian Catholic.

The Red Raiders' game against District 3 consolation winner Greenwood will follow.

Class AA

Mount Carmel enters today's game riding the high of winning its first District 4 title in 26 years and a 22-3 overall record, but all that's in the rearview mirror.

If the Red Tornadoes expect to last longer in the state playoffs than they did last year (an opening round loss to Tamaqua), they'll have to start the way they finished against Loyalsock when they outscored the Lancers 30-19 in the second half.

Ranotta Ahrensfield leads the Tornadoes in scoring with 13.5 a game, followed by Kim Andruscavage (13.3) and Danielle Bernini (12.0).

Mid-Valley, the third-place team coming out of District 2 comes into the game with a 22-4 record, it's losses all coming at the hands of District 2 champ Dunmore.

The Spartans have had recent success after snapping a 65-game losing streak before current head coach Bob Doughton took over. Since then, Mid-Valley has gone 55-25 and won a game in the state playoffs in 2009.

They're led in scoring by junior guard Danielle Terranella with 18.2 points per game, followed by senior center Ali Walsh, who is averaging 12.2 points and more than 10 rebounds per game. Both climbed over the 1,000-point mark this season for the Spartans.

Andruscavage is closest to that career plateau for the Tornadoes with 928 points. Ahrensfield is at 863 for her career.

Class A

Lourdes and Line Mountain can swap notes on each other's first-round opponents.

Lourdes, while it didn't beat Marian in their two games this year, got an awful good look at the Fillies in the Red Raiders' season-opening tournament, losing by four.

Line Mountain, on the other hand, does have the game plan to beat Greenwood, which it did by 15 points earlier this year.

Mutually beneficial notes aside, the Eagles and Red Raiders did get together in Danville this week to work on things each expects to see on Saturday.

Looking first at Marian, the Fillies seem to be the exact opposite of Line Mountain. They like to slow things down, scoring just 43.8 points per game, and have won all 20 games that they've allowed under 40 points. Looking to go inside first on offense, a pair of forward lead the Fillies in scoring. Danielle Tristani averages 10.2 and Gillian Ferko 9.8 per game. The Fillies also allow just a shade below 30 points per game with a tight man-to-man defense that makes teams work for an open shot.

When Line Mountain can make its shots and set up its press, the Eagles are as dangerous as anyone. Lourdes exploited the negative side of those ifs in the D-4 title game, but if Mikhail Whitcomb (14.5 ppg), Kasey Long (12.4 ppg) and Paige Swineford (10.0 ppg) can shake off their shooting woes, the Fillies won't look quite so big.

Like Marian, Greenwood is a team with size to spare, but not a lot of depth, which should play into the Red Raiders' strength.

Senior Autumn Pellman leads the wildcats with 19.5 points per game, but she's not the only big girl that can do damage. Fellow 5-foot, 9-inch forward Maria Rumberger is averaging 10.5 a game, and has hit 34 3-pointers, making the defense keep tabs on her. Lourdes' Christina Perles, averaging 11.4 ppg, will do her share to keep the Wildcats' at bay in the paint.

With the inside clogged with talent, the game may come down to the guards. Greenwood's Salene Shaffer is averaging 9.5 ppg, but her quickness and court vision are the intangibles that make the Wildcats more than a bunch of bigs, while the Red Raiders' Sarah Getchey (10.4 ppg) heads a sharp-shooting corps for the Red Raiders that aren't afraid to let the 3-pointer attempts fly.
